Prioritizing phylogenetic diversity to protect functional diversity of reef corals

چکیده
Aim The ecosystem functions and services of coral reefs are critical for coastal communities worldwide. Due to conservation resource limitation, species need be prioritized protect desirable properties biodiversity, such as functional diversity (FD), which has been associated with greater functioning but is difficult quantify directly. Selecting maximize phylogenetic (PD) shown indirectly capture FD in certain other taxa not corals. Here, we test this hypothesis, the “phylogenetic gambit”, on corals within global marine protected areas (MPAs). Location Global reefs. Methods Based distributions reef corals, a complete species-level phylogeny trait data, compared assemblages MPAs when selected PD versus randomly. relationships between were also tested predictors surrogacy. We then used perform spatial prioritization protection assessed congruence two approaches. Results captured significantly more than random subset 83.1% all selection scenarios across would average 18.7% selection. Spatial analyses showed some mismatches PD- FD-optimized planning units, particularly Tropical Western Atlantic, high degree overlap optimizations regions lends further credence PD-maximizing strategy conserving FD. Main Conclusions A generally protects relative species, suggesting that gambit” valid There risks, however, PD-maximized FD-maximized MPA networks highlight specific shortcomings PD-maximization approach. Nevertheless, data-deficient circumstances, maximizing may provide viable alternative.

The future of evolutionary diversity in reef corals.
One-third of the world's reef-building corals are facing heightened extinction risk from climate change and other anthropogenic impacts. Previous studies have shown that such threats are not distributed randomly across the coral tree of life, and future extinctions have the potential to disproportionately reduce the phylogenetic diversity of this group on a global scale. However, the impact of ...
متن کاملHuman-Mediated Loss of Phylogenetic and Functional Diversity in Coral Reef Fishes
Beyond the loss of species richness, human activities may also deplete the breadth of evolutionary history (phylogenetic diversity) and the diversity of roles (functional diversity) carried out by species within communities, two overlooked components of biodiversity. Both are, however, essential to sustain ecosystem functioning and the associated provision of ecosystem services, particularly un...
متن کاملLow symbiont diversity in southern Great Barrier Reef corals, relative to those of the Caribbean
The specific identity of endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodinium spp.) from most zooxanthellate corals is unknown. In a survey of symbiotic cnidarians from the southern Great Barrier Reef (GBR), 23 symbiont types were identified from 86 host species representing 40 genera. A majority (.85%) of these symbionts belong to a single phylogenetic clade or subgenus (‘‘C’’) composed of closely rela...
متن کاملEicosanoid Diversity of Stony Corals
Oxylipins are well-established lipid mediators in plants and animals. In mammals, arachidonic acid (AA)-derived eicosanoids control inflammation, fever, blood coagulation, pain perception and labor, and, accordingly, are used as drugs, while lipoxygenases (LOX), as well as cyclooxygenases (COX) serve as therapeutic targets for drug development. In soft corals, eicosanoids are synthesized on dem...
متن کاملThe Diversity and Biogeography of Western Indian Ocean Reef-Building Corals
This study assesses the biogeographic classification of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) on the basis of the species diversity and distribution of reef-building corals. Twenty one locations were sampled between 2002 and 2011. Presence/absence of scleractinian corals was noted on SCUBA, with the aid of underwater digital photographs and reference publications for species identification. Sampling e...
